Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
