The network's Leading Fresh Series of 2025 Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
