“I’m 58, so I might decide in a few years, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what lies ahead.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about the specific conditions would have to unfold to tempt his return to management, he revealed he was not instantly drawn to such a return. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing in the rain through long matches; I'm glad to skip press conferences repeatedly each week or having 10-12 interviews weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, yet sharing a meal with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. With many victories meaning regularly great spirits around the place. I can still hear Van Dijk's laughter ringing in my ears to illustrate.”
Commending Arne Slot
He commended of the current boss, crediting him for the adjustments that took the title in the previous season. Liverpool have lost a string of losses in every contest post heavy investment, but he rubbished the suggestion of it representing the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker in Flo[rian] Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. A remarkable prospect. Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, things will improve.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly about the death of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in during his tenure, and its impact for the team. Jota lost his life in a vehicle collision alongside his brother in July.
“Can you substitute such an individual? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, his personality mattered. It's hard to picture the dressing room missing him. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A devastating blow for all the boys also. Not a single person would cite it to justify results but it is the situation. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Coping with it individually is challenging. Overwhelming.”
