That Grisly Animated Film Ending That Haunts Viewers

Among every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced conclusion of a graphically gory as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.

Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, somber , often savage universe that included some tiny , forlorn glimmers of optimism.

Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to advance the medium even more, the director clarified that it was more an effort to convey a widespread, cross-cultural theme about “the common origin of all wars.”

That idea is conveyed through a squad of vividly colored bears , clearly based on a well-known series of lovable figures.

Being raised in a society centered on warmongering and the defense industry, a lot of these animals are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, because of a sacred text that tells the bears they used to be rulers of the woods, until the horned beings forced them out.

A few did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, , would rather sample narcotics or fornicate outdoors.

In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals , clear urges.

For one especially vicious, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle against unicorns transforms into a route to power — and particularly to dominance above his softer, more compassionate sibling Tubby.

This bear is a bully and a seeming sociopath , and as horror takes over his unit and takes his comrades individually, he seizes more and more influence on his own behalf, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.

At the same time, these mythical beings are experiencing their own horror, in the form of a spreading, destructive monster in their woods.

“In the early stages, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it turns into a more intense and sad film. And ultimately, it becomes a scary feature.”

Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the more quirky movies by a legendary filmmaker, which find a mischievous joy in letting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.

Then it evolves into more akin to a darker movie from that director, including ever more graphic violence and a tangible connection to the actual suffering of conflict.

In the finale, it is an outright theatrical horror carnage.

The terror that turns this a Halloween-friendly watch begins well before than that description suggests.

Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of graphic films who want to view a film they have not watched previously, and can endure a narrative that offers unflinching brutality.

See it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the finale will dig deep within you and linger.
