Springbok Player Jan-Hendrik Wessels Given Nine-Match Suspension for Inappropriate Contact
Wessels is ruled out for the Springboks' autumn internationals.
South Africa front-rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels has received a ban of nine games for touching opponent Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' URC win over Connacht.
This event happened in the 18th minute of the close contest against Connacht on Friday, with opposing player Murphy receiving a 20-minute red card after reacting angrily by striking Wessels on the head area.
Following Murphy reported the incident to referee Mike Adamson, the event was reviewed by the TMO, who concluded no definitive proof.
Wessels stayed on the field until he was replaced in the second half of the game.
While the United Rugby Championship confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a governing body, the Springbok was found to have breached the code of conduct, which declares:
"Any athlete must not engage in actions that is against the principles of fair play. Such behavior covers grabbing, twisting or compressing the genitals."
Disciplinary officials determined that the contact met the level for dismissal and warranted a 12-week suspension, the minimum suspension under World Rugby rules for such an violation.
Nonetheless, Wessels' suspension was shortened by three weeks because of his good conduct prior to and at the hearing and his good record.
Wessels and the Bulls have the right to challenge the decision, but as it stands, the ban will prevent the young player out of the South African national team's autumn Tests against the Brave Blossoms, France, Italy and Ireland.
Wessels will also miss the Bulls' URC games against Warriors, the Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup games with Bègles and Saints.
The prop has earned 10 caps for South Africa and was included in their Rugby Championship-winning team during the recent tournament.
Murphy, meanwhile, is eligible to play against the Irish rivals in this weekend's domestic clash after being exonerated.
