New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a ā€œsnake and a liarā€ and alleging of having ā€œa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, stating he now intends to support the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

ā€œI think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how important this election is,ā€ Adams stated.

The mayor further explained, ā€œResidents have seen their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.ā€

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by saying, ā€œI’ll be with Andrew this evening.ā€

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
