British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
