An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange accommodation upon arrival, however when I arrived, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
Coming from Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the airport ā only to discover that airport, unlike Singaporeās, closes around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the evening in an establishment operating 24/7. That wouldnāt put me in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
I must have looked lost because a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University ā which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location to rest to spend the night.
With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance ā and remain incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I didnāt meet the student afterwards, but Iāve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more folks like that woman.
