A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
